Rihanna is having an epic year! First it was the filming of the anticipated film Ocean’s 8, followed by an stunning spread in Harpers Bazaar, and now, the pop star is being named Harvard University’s 2017 Humanitarian of the Year.
On February 28, Badgalriri will be presented with the coveted Peter J. Gomes Humanitarian Award all thanks to her ongoing charitable work.
S. Allen Counter, the Harvard Foundation’s director said in a statement on Wednesday that “Rihanna has charitably built a state-of-the-art center for oncology and nuclear medicine to diagnose and treat breast cancer at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown, Barbados.”
He added, “She has also created the Clara Lionel Foundation Scholarship Program [named for her grandmother and grandfather] for students attending college in the U.S. from Caribbean countries, and supports the Global Partnership for Education and Global Citizen Project, a multiyear campaign that will provide children with access to education in over 60 developing countries, giving priority to girls and those affected by lack of access to education in the world today.”
The singer is also notably known for her work with the self-founded Clara Lionel Foundation. The organization, which launched in 2012, supports and funds “innovative and effective education and health programs around the world.”
