Public schools in Chicago definitely don’t have any problems with Chance the Rapper, because the 23-year-old just did something major.
On Monday, the Grammy Award winner announced that he will be donating $1 million to Chicago public schools. Yes, you read that correctly.
During a press conference at Wescott Elementary School on the South Side of Chicago, Chance suggested “While I’m frustrated and disappointed in the governor’s inaction, that will not stop me from doing all I can to support Chicago’s most valuable resource: its children three blocks from where I was raised.”
“Today, I am proud to announce I am donating $1 million to Chicago public schools,” he said during the conference, which was also streamed via Instagram Live.
Chance’s announcement comes on the heels of a meeting he had with Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner to discuss CPS funding. In December, Rauner vetoed a plan to allot $215 million to Chicago Public Schools. Following the meeting, Chance said that Rauner’s answers to his immediate questions were “vague.”
Chance said during the conference, “He has since called me over the weekend. Our talks were unsuccessful.” He also expressed frustratoin that the Republican politician “vetoed the funding to close out the school year. Our kids should not be held hostage because of political positioning.”
Chancelor Bennett, the rapper’s legal name, is one class act.
