British Olympian Germaine Mason lost his life on Thursday after a fatal motorcycle accident in Jamaica and fellow Olympian Usain Bolt was present during the tragic crash.
The Great Britain Olympic Team confirmed the tragic news on Thursday via Twitter. “Team GB are incredibly saddened by the sudden death of Olympic medallist Germaine Mason. Rest in peace, Germaine,” the message read.
According to reports, Mason, 34, was leading a group of athletes, including Bolt, on motorcycles through Kingston when he crashed. Apparently, he was trying to avoid a vehicle when he lost control. Some reports suggest the athlete was returning from a Soca party.
According to UK’s Guardian, the Jamaican-born track star was pronounced dead at the scene.
Usain, who was a dear friend of Mason’s, has yet to respond.
Mason was a British high jumper who picked up a silver medal during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Based on the athlete’s social media account, he was also a huge fan of motorcycles, sharing a series of images throughout the years on his bike.
